Manos de Mujeres is a project within the Tolima department. It means hands of women. This means that only women are involved in the coffee production. Asoagrotol Galilea has started a project to promote female farmers. This sounds like a women empowerment to get more female farmers, but that is not the starting point of this project. Globally there are more female farmers than male farmers, but often the male is put forward by marriage law or simply because it is the standard in society. Yet it is clear that women play a much more important role within a farm than the sole employee who also prepares the food in the evening.
With the Manos de Mujeres project, therefore, not so much women are encouraged to enter the agricultural sector, but as soon as women are in the agricultural sector and grow coffee in order to put them forward as owners of the farm and as entrepreneurs who take the coffee to a wants to bring higher quality and market it in its own way. Through this project, our suppliers come into contact with other female finca owners and together they can look at new investments and new positions within a sector that, like many other sectors, has been dominated by men until now.
